Hysterectomy Q & A

When is a hysterectomy needed?

You may need a hysterectomy if you have chronic reproductive system problems, such as:

  • Fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine prolapse
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Severe pelvic pain
  • Uterine cancer

Although there are noninvasive ways to address some of the conditions above, you may not achieve symptom relief with more conservative treatments. Sometimes, a hysterectomy is the only way to resolve your gynecological issue.

But, it’s important to understand that a hysterectomy ends your ability to bear children, so it’s something that Dr. Islam will discuss with you in detail ahead of time.

What are the different kinds of hysterectomy?

There are a few different kinds of hysterectomy. The type of hysterectomy depends on exactly what structures the doctor removes.

  • Total hysterectomy: removes the whole uterus
  • Partial hysterectomy: removes the top part of the uterus, but the cervix remains
  • Radical hysterectomy: removes the uterus, cervix, and a portion of the vagina, and sometimes the ovaries and other nearby structures

The majority of hysterectomy surgeries are partial or total hysterectomies. Radical hysterectomy is almost always reserved for cases of advanced cancer because it’s the only effective way to remove all of the cancerous tissue.

How does a robotic hysterectomy work?

Usually, you’ll be under general anesthesia for robotic hysterectomy, so you’ll sleep through the entire procedure. In a robotic hysterectomy, Dr. Islam creates a small incision around your navel or a couple of incisions in your abdomen. She places a slender tool containing a miniature camera into the incision.

Dr. Islam sits at a console directly beside you. She controls the robotic arms using the state-of-the-art da Vinci system as she views the camera feed on a high-definition screen. Each motion Dr. Islam makes is precisely duplicated by the robotic arms. She carefully and safely removes your uterus in pieces through the small incisions.

Thanks to the smaller incisions and much less invasive nature of robotic surgery, you can expect a faster procedure, less bleeding, less pain, and a shorter overall recovery period than you would have with traditional abdominal hysterectomy.
